What Christians Believe
The heart of what Christians believe is summed up well in 1 Corinthians 15:3-4: “…that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures.” This tells us three core things.
First, when Jesus died on the cross he was dealing with human sin. That is, he was bearing our sins for us, so that we would not have to receive punishment for them. He died in our place and by this he offers forgiveness and a fresh start.
Second, Jesus really died that day, but rose from the dead three days later to show that he had dealt with human sinfulness altogether, and had triumphed over death once and for all. This means that those who trust in Jesus’ death and resurrection for their sins will be resurrected with him and will live forever.
Third, it points to the scriptures, to the Bible, to know the meaning of Jesus’ death and resurrection. The Bible is God’s word to us and shows us how to live.
